An iconic British Mid century modernist dining set comprising a large chrome and glass demi-lune design dining table and 8 matching chrome and leather chairs by Richard Young for Merrow Associates.
 
Almost certainly a bespoke design by Merrow Associates for a client as this set features a longer, extended version of their chrome demi-lune design table which makes it a unique one off piece. Although this design, which has much in common with a similar design by Alessandro Albrizzi, can occasionally be found in the Vintage marketplace, you’ll never see one of this length as they are always based on a single central bay rather than the extended two we have here. On this basis one can only assume it was designed specifically to accommodate the chairs as a bespoke 8 seat set.
 
The chairs are also very rare as the semi-circular tripod base chair by Richard Young is probably the most sought after design of all his chairs - as such to find 8 in one set, and in such amazing condition, is like seeing a Unicorn standing at the end of your dining room! And they are an absolute perfect match for the table with the shapes and recesses providing a perfect balance and harmony and act like a reflection from the table designs to chair.
 
Merrow Associates produced many outstanding British mid century pieces throughout the 1960’s and 70’s and stood out as producing a more modernist style of design during the period. Their suite of furniture designs encompassed dining and coffee tables as well as wall units, book shelves and serving trolleys.
The table top is single section made from two pieces of laminated glass, which in itself is unusual for a dining table. This sits freely upon the polished chrome base and both the glass and chrome are in very good vintage condition with no chips out of the edge of the glass and no rust on the chrome. The 8 chairs, as you can see from the photos, can actually tuck under the table in 2 different away, facing in, or reversed in, facing out – both look great, although the latter might suit better if you need to save space when not in use. 
 
The other point to note is that as the chairs tuck under the table the total chair height, by necessity, is lower, which makes the chairs more compact. That said, the leather seat pads themselves are at a regular height, which is a neat feature in a smaller height chair. This means they more hug your hips rather than your back, but they are great to slouch in by virtue of the padded arm rests. Like the table base, there is no rust or flaking of the chrome and the leather upholstery looks to have been recently professionally replaced and therefore shows no major marks to speak of.
