Vintage Mid century fully adjustable brass and nickel THV376 floor lamp by TH. Valentiner, produced in Denmark by Povl Dinesen, 1950s.
This is a rare and elusive floor lamp designed, and produced, by two rare and elusive people themselves!
It’s a fact about 20th Century design that some designers, manufacturers and key distributors occasionally slip through the net of recognition. As such, when you try to research them, there appears to be no direct information about their life and work; other than some artefacts attributed to them in times gone by. And so it is with this light.
It’s believed that TH. Valentiner was a Danish artist that also worked with a small number of manufacturers and distributors in creating lighting – actually in much the same way as another Danish unknown, Henning Norgaard, worked with Komfort to produce one of the most beautiful coffee tables I’ve ever seen. But nothing else is known about them.
The THV 376 floor lamp bears Valentiner’s initials (cast into the base as shown) and was distributed by Povl Dinesen; although we don’t know if Dinesen actually manufactured the product or just distributed it. Like Valentiner, Dinesen is a design ghost and only by searching some mid century forums have we found out that whilst he apparently did also design furniture himself, he was mostly known for retailing Danish lighting and furniture and distributing it to the USA – as it was with this light and a smaller table lamp version (THV 375) also designed by Valentiner.
The structure itself is crafted from solid brass which was often brushed or bright polished; or nickel plated to order. Occasionally it can found in a mixture of finishes, as here, where the base and the top stem are brushed brass with the main stem, struts and adjustable fastening joint being nickel plated. It is completed with a simple light coloured fabric shade and electrical cord with inline on/off switch and 3 pin plug.
Not only is it a beautifully elegant and simple light but it also benefits from a very clever rotating central clamp that is used in conjunction with an adjustable head and extending cross support. All these elements combined together means that the lamp is almost infinitely variable, and can also be adjusted in height. This makes it a very flexible decorative or task light that can be used as an uplighter, angled down lighter, or set to focus on a wall or a painting as more of a spotlight; as shown in the accompanying photos.
It remains in very good vintage condition with some small marks and scratches on the base and metal supports just as you would expect, and with some slight discoloration and smudges to the shade. None of this detracts for the beauty and function of the lamp itself.
It is supplied with an LED bulb and has been fully electrically tested - but in any event we would recommend you test the lamp independently before use in case any damages have occurred during transportation.
Dimensions
Because this light can be adjusted in numerous ways it means the actual overall height and width can vary significantly based on how it is set up. As an example, the size of the lamp as shown in the main picture is approximately 150cm high and the shade protrudes around 30cm past the base. The base itself has a diameter of 32cm and the shade is 25cm in diameter with a height of 25cm.
