Originally designed in 1956 the PK22 stands out as one of Kjaerholm’s most lauded and recognised designs. Inspired by the both the ancient ‘Klismos’ Greek chair design and Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chair, it features legs that are angled in opposite directions to provide a strong but light frame. The frame is constructed from bent steel bar and has a simple elegance that originates from his graduation project, the ‘Element’ Chair. This chair, also known as the PK25, had a frame made from a single piece of steel and this was adapted in the PK22 to be formed from additional parts to lower production costs.
The new PK22 was an immediate commercial success and critical acclaim followed when in 1957 the design was awarded the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale, the world's premier design fair. The prize immediately elevated Kjaerholm’s status and career and he went on to produce many notable designs with his close friend and manufacturing partner Ejvind Kold Christensen. These designs, collectively known as ‘The Kjærholm Collection’, represented designs developed by Kjaerholm from 1951 to 1967 and from 1982, two years after his death, they were licensed to Fritz Hansen where the PK22 is still produced to this day.
These particular examples were probably produced in the 1990s and benefit from the Fritz Hansen stamp and label as shown. They are in very good original condition. The frames and leather only shows signs of minimal use with a few small marks here and there and some slight stretching of the leather in the seat as one would expect – there are no holes, tears or major marks. All of this is shown on the accompanying photographs.
The chairs are surprisingly comfortable as they have a webbing support structure spanning the frames under the leather cover in both the seat and back. Naturally they would work well as lounge chairs in a domestic setting but could also work as office reception, or executive office chairs.
The chairs can be purchased as a discounted pair via this listing, our can be purchased individually via another one of my listings on this site HERE.
