British Mid century 1950s beech and walnut veneer dining set by Robin Day for Hille.
 
This dining set features a rare Robin Day extending table matched to 4 Hillestak chairs. Owned by the same family since new this 1950s set was bought as a complete set with matching chairs that all have a plywood and beech base topped with walnut veneer. It’s a compact set perfect for anyone looking for a beautifully aged Mid century dining set with a flexible space saving footprint. The table extends with one leaf and the chairs can be stacked if required when not in use.
 
It is preserved in its original condition with marks and patina commensurate with its age. I believe a beauty in a piece like this comes from the vintage character derived from over 60 years of use – it’s been very much enjoyed as a family table and this shows. As such although it has been tidied up it has not been fully restored so as to preserve its past.
 
Hille was founded in 1906 by Russian emigrant, Salamon Hille and has a long and distinguished history in British furniture design – and is perhaps most famous for its association with designer Robin Day who worked with the company for over 20 years. At the forefront of British Design and that time Robin Day produced a range of functional and practical furniture that has become much sought after in recent years. Collectors are drawn to the simplicity of his designs and the honest nature of the materials used and as such his designs have stood the test of time; many of which have been re-introduced in recent years.
