This set features a low lounge dining table with 6 reversible stools and a back rest, and as such is perfect as a space saving dining set for a small dining area as the stools tuck under the table when not in use. The stool tops are also cleverly designed to enable them to rotate and can therefore be used as side tables, which further adds to the functionality of the set.
It’s interesting to note that a number of Danish designers in the 50s and 60s produced dining sets for formal dining but also for lounge dining. This concept echoed the Danish ideal of Hygge that promoted comfort and harmony and as such a low dining set was designed to be used in an informal way and setting. Quite often this involved light meals, drinks and card playing.
Occasionally you will see one, or a pair, of the reversible stools for sale that were mostly produced by Odense Maskinsnedkeri (later renamed OD Mobler) but they don’t compare to the earlier versions produced in small numbers in the mid to late 1950’s by Christensens Møbelfabrik, who also produced Buch’s Model 310 chair. You will immediately notice a difference in build quality, choice of wood, the overall finish and in the beautiful finger joints that hold the stools and the table together. This is also carried through to the finish in the original vinyl upholstered tops that have gently rising sides rather than a pure block form. To therefore find an early set with the table, stools and backrest is a very rare find indeed.
This set is presented in a totally untouched and original vintage condition. As such it has general wear commensurate with age and use but is in really very good vintage condition. The upholstery is also original and again is in excellent condition save one small imprint of a cup base in one top. This can be seen in the photo of the stools but is hardly noticeable depending on the light. There are no rips, tears or holes in the vinyl.
All in all it’s a superb and unusual dining set that is both functional and beautiful using clean, crisp modernist lines and would therefore be at home in both a traditional or contemporary setting.
